The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that it has completed a Superfund hazardous substances removal at the Lamar County Drum Dump Site in Millport, Lamar County, AL. A removal is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize or clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment. The removal was completed under the authority and direction of the EPA Region 4 Emergency Response and Removal Branch.
The site comprises two locations along Atkins Road in rural Lamar County. These sites were combined as one removal action. One location is 2 miles south of Highway 96 on the east side of Atkins Road, and the other is approximately 1.5 miles south of Highway 96 on the west side of Atkins Road. The site contained twenty-seven 55 gallon drums that leaked grease and other materials onto the ground. The removal included sampling and analysis, waste containment and cleanup activities; staging all drums in an upright position, labeling, sampling, over-packing drums and excavating contaminated soil. The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA, also known as Superfund) and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization (SARA) authorize EPA to respond to actual or threatened releases of hazardous substances that may endanger public health, welfare, or the environment. The Administrative Record file is available for public review during normal business hours at the following location: U.S. EPA Records Center - Region 4 The file includes documents that form the basis for selection of the removal action. This may include, but is not limited to the preliminary assessment and inspection reports, test results, and the Action Memorandum. |
