EPA, USDA SEEK PUBLIC COMMENT ON
To ensure that the public has an opportunity to comment on the development of Vice President Al Gore’s new Clean Water Action Plan, EPA and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) are taking public comments until Dec. 8 and holding three public meetings this month on the plan. The Vice President announced the initiative to develop the Clean Water Action Plan on Oct. 18, in commemoration of the 25th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act. The Vice President directed federal departments and agencies to develop by mid-February an aggressive action plan to strengthen the public health protections of the Clean Water Act, prevent polluted runoff, and ensure community-based watershed management. EPA wants public comments on achieving the goals of the plan, on improving clean water locally and nationally, on improving the implementation of the Clean Water Act, and to find out about any new local approaches, initiatives and successes that may be expanded nationally. The announcement on the Action Plan was published in the Federal Register on Nov. 7. Additional information is available via the Internet at: www.epa.gov/cleanwater/; and from USDA at: www.nhq.nrcs.usda.gov/cleanwater/. Public comments also can be mailed by Dec. 8 to Robert Goo, Assessment and Watershed Protection Division (4503F), U.S. EPA, Washington, D.C. 20460, or to Denise Coleman, USDA, NRCS, Room 6032, South Building, P.O. Box 2890, Washington, D.C. 20013. To date, public meetings have been held in Atlanta, Ga., and in Columbia, Mo.; the third will be held next Tues., Nov. 25, in Sacramento, Calif.
