EPA Receives Champion Award From National Nursing Centers Consortium

PHILADELPHIA – EPA mid-Atlantic Regional Administrator Donald S. Welsh accepted a Champion Award today at the national nursing centers conference at Philadelphia’s convention center.

“EPA is honored to be recognized for its community-based practices on children’s health issues. We are proud of the progress we have made here in Philadelphia and throughout the mid-Atlantic region in bringing children’s health issues to the forefront. Our main focus is preventing lead poisoning and reducing asthma attacks,” said Welsh.

For the past three years EPA has partnered with the Philadelphia-based National Nursing Center Consortium in Lead Safe Babies, a program which seeks to eliminate lead poisoning, and Asthma Safe Kids working to reduce triggers that set off asthma attacks. This year, these programs were expanded to reach into the Pittsburgh-area and Western Pennsylvania communities, too.

EPA and the consortium have also developed a Philadelphia after-school program that teaches children from 10 - 16 about lead, asthma, and other environmental health issues called RADICAL (Real Actions Directed to Improving Children's health And Lifestyles).

This is the first national conference for national nursing centers. They are community-based health centers that are managed by nurses. Today’s conference precedes the American Public Health Association Conference that will be held in Philadelphia this weekend.
