EPA Launches New Lawn Care And Landscaping Campaign

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency mid-Atlantic regional staff will launch a new lawn care campaign on Saturday, May 14, at Feeney’s Garden Center, located at 1134 Bustleton Pike, in Feasterville, Bucks County, Pa.. between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The new EPA campaign known as, Healthy Yards, Healthy Lawns, Healthy Environment (H3), is designed to educate homeowners in responsible lawn care and landscaping practices.

Lawn care products can contain large amounts of nutrients, such as nitrogen, which can turn a yard into a lush green lawn, and they can kill or control pests and weeds. But some products can be extremely damaging pollutants if not used properly, washing into lakes, ponds, and streams and contaminating drinking water and killing fish and wildlife.

Caring for your lawn properly can both enhance its appearance and contribute to its environmental benefits. The focus of this campaign is to provide easy landscaping tips that we can all follow that will protect the health of local water supplies while creating lovely yards that enhance the environment.

EPA staff will be joined at Feeney’s Garden Center by the Penn State Cooperative Extension integrated pest management (IPM) program, the Penn State “Bugmobile,” Penn State Master Gardeners, Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s IPM program, the Churchville Nature Center, Delaware Valley Earth Force, and Penn State Master Gardeners from Bucks County. These experts and other professionals will answer lawn and garden questions and provide information to the public regarding the safe use of lawn care chemicals and landscaping techniques that will reduce the impact of residential lawns on the environment.
