EPA Region 7 Administrator in Kansas City, Kan., Sworn in as Agency's Chief Pesticide and Toxics Regulator

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Kansas City, Kan., July 7, 2006) – Jim Gulliford, Region 7 administrator for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in Kansas City, Kan., was sworn in today as the Agency's assistant administrator for Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances.
Gulliford was sworn in by EPA Administrator Stephen L. Johnson during a ceremony at the regional office. Region 7 includes Iowa, Kansas, Missouri and Nebraska. Gulliford has headed the regional office since 2001.
He will move to EPA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., to assume his new role leading the Office of Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances. That office regulates pesticides and chemicals to protect public health and the environment and promotes innovative programs to prevent pollution.
Region 7 Deputy Administrator William W. Rice will serve as acting regional administrator until a new regional administrator is appointed. Rice has been with EPA since its inception in 1970 and has served as acting regional administrator on four previous occasions.
Gulliford brought 25 years of professional experience administering environmental programs with him to EPA. He worked at Iowa State University and Southern Illinois University in mine reclamation and environmental protection program areas before he became director of Iowa's Department of Soil Conservation in 1982. He was later named director of the Division of Soil Conservation when the Department of Soil Conservation merged into the Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship.
He earned a bachelor's degree in forestry management and a master's degree in forestry economics and marketing from Iowa State University. Gulliford was born in St. Paul, Minn. He and his wife, Yvonne, have two grown children.
