The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today that a Superfund hazardous substance removal will begin at the Romarc Industries site, Williston, Levy County, FL, during the week of March 29, 1999. A removal is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize or clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment. The removal will take place under the authority and direction of the Agency’s Emergency Response and Removal Branch (ERRB).
The removal will include:
sampling and analysis of contents in drums and containers;
sampling and analysis of contaminated soil;
transportation and disposal of all site wastes; and
restoration of the site (including backfill, grade, and revegetation).
The estimated cost of removal is $500,000.
While in operation, the facility received hazardous waste, primarily flammable resins, from companies throughout the United States. The EPA was contacted by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection in February 1998 for site assessment and possible removal action. An estimated 1,000 drums of flammable resin waste, in various stages of deterioration, are located on the site.
Persons interested in obtaining additional information are encouraged to contact John Nolen, EPA On- Scene Coordinator, at 404-562-8750 or Sherryl A. Carbonaro, Community Relations Coordinator, at 404-562- 8742 or 1-800-564-7577.
