COMPANY OWNER PLEADS GUILTY
COMPANY OWNER PLEADS GUILTY
David Ziegler of St. Louis, Mo., owner of the Ziegler-Hopkins Company and a certified wastewater treatment operator, pled guilty on Oct. 31 in U.S. District Court in St. Louis to violating the Clean Water Act. Ziegler admitted that he knowingly discharged wastewater and sewage into the Big Tavern Creek without a permit. The creek is a tributary of the Missouri River. Discharging sewage into surface waters can reduce the oxygen level of the water and harm fish and aquatic life. When sentenced, Ziegler faces a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison and/or a fine of up to $250,000. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Missouri prosecuted the case.
