Contact Information: For more information contact the Office of External Affairs at (214) 665-2200.

Area businesses can learn how to cut costs through waste prevention during a national interactive satellite forum sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) WasteWi$e program from 10 a.m. to noon Wednesday, June 17.

Satellite downlinks for "Waste Prevention Pays: Businesses Cut Costs by Cutting Waste" will be at the Alliance for Higher Education, 17103 Preston Road, LBJ 107 #250 in Dallas and at the Environmental Education, Science and Technology Building at the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. To reserve a place, contact Sherry Fuerst at (214) 665-6454 for the Dallas location, or Greg Pashia at (940) 565-2987 for the Denton location.

The forum will feature business executives who will share the successful money-saving waste prevention strategies their companies have adopted. Also, a waste analyst will reveal the hidden costs of waste in the office, the shipping and receiving department, and in common purchasing practices. Participants will learn specific actions to eliminate these unnecessary costs.

The program will feature the following business leaders who have helped their WasteWi$e companies reap environmental and economic benefits from waste prevention:

Jim Bosch, environmental team leader for Target Stores, a national chain of more than 800 retail stores. Target, working closely with its vendors, has saved millions of dollars by reducing packaging material and the labor costs associated with packaging. Target also profits from a range of waste prevention efforts, such as paperless purchasing and a salvage program for remainder merchandise.

Nancy Hirshberg, director of natural resources for Stonyfield Farm Inc., a manufacturer of nationally distributed yogurt and ice cream products. Stonyfield Farm’s waste prevention activities include selling unusable food products for animal feed, conducting office supply swaps, and participating in environmental design training programs.

Jim McCarthy, general manager of government and public affairs for CITGO Petroleum Corp. CITGO has saved thousands of dollars by providing company phone books, publications and other forms electronically. Additional waste reduction strategies include reuse programs for wood pallets and transport packaging and employee Swap Days.

The satellite program also features Ken Brown, a nationally recognized waste analyst, who will share lessons learned from his work helping hundreds of businesses start a range of creative, cost-saving waste reduction strategies.
