PHILADELPHIA - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced that it has cited the U.S. Navy for alleged violating hazardous waste regulations at the Naval Research Laboratory, 4500 Overlook Ave., S.W., Washington, D.C.

The administrative complaint charges that the Navy violated several provisions
of its hazardous waste storage permit.  Specifically, EPA alleged that the Navy
failed to store hazardous waste containers on a leakproof surface, and stored incompatible hazardous materials (lead-acid batteries and sodium hyper-chlorite solution) next to one another without proper precautions to prevent commingling.  

EPA has ordered the Navy to cease storing hazardous waste in violation of its permit requirements, and to come into compliance with the terms and conditions of its permit.  EPA seeks a $27,500 penalty for these violations.

The Navy has the right to request a conference with EPA to discuss the complaint, and may request a hearing to contest the alleged violations and the proposed penalty.
