(New York, N.Y.) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded $268,383 to organizations in New York to fund projects that will help small and medium-sized businesses reduce pollution. These grants were awarded to the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute and Empire State Development.

“EPA helps businesses reduce the use of toxic materials, save energy, protect human health and save money,” said Regional Administrator Judith A. Enck. “The strategy is simple: it’s always better not to generate waste in the first place. It’s better for the environment and it’s better for a company’s bottom line.”

With the help of an $89,000 EPA grant, the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute, in partnership with the Alliance for Manufacturing and Technology, will help manufacturing companies located in the Southern Tier region of New York State use green engineering to reduce toxic chemicals used or produced in their processes. The New York State Pollution Prevention Institute will focus on companies with high toxics use, such as the fabricated metal products, printing, and machinery manufacturing industries.

The EPA awarded Empire State Development $180,000 to establish a “Western New York Sustainable Business Roundtable,” which will serve as a resource for Western New York businesses in reducing their pollution. Empire State Development will work with the Erie County Department of Environment and Planning to create tailored sustainability plans for local businesses. The plans will contain projects designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions; decrease hazardous materials; improve water conservation; minimize the use of toxic chemicals; and save money.
