New Mexico Environmental Projects Receive EPA Grants

      Five projects in New Mexico received environmental education grants totaling $41,524 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The projects increase environmental awareness while encouraging students to pursue careers in environmental fields.

      "Our environment's future depends on our children's understanding of environmental issues and their ingenuity in creating solutions.  Environmental education projects that provide real world contexts and results are the best way to foster these abilities," EPA Regional Administrator Richard E. Greene said.

      The Santa Fe Children's Museum received $5,000 for its "Teen Educators in Earthworks" project, which increases environmental literacy among families in Santa Fe and northern  New Mexico.

      The New Mexico Department of Health received $16,374 for its "Lead Poisoning Prevention for Expectant Teen-Aged Mothers and Their Children" project, which helps teachers, school staff and health care providers across New Mexico teach expectant teens about the adverse effects of lead exposure before, during, and after pregnancy and how to prevent lead exposure.

      The New Mexico Environment Department received $10,000 for its "Public Outreach about Effects of Ground-Level Ozone in San Juan County" project, which will provide ozone educational activities to 28 elementary schools.

      The Environmental Education Association of New Mexico received $5,150 for its "New Mexico Multi-Facilitator Training Program," which will help teachers across the state learn about natural resources and how to integrate that information into effective classroom teaching strategies.

      The New Mexico Office of the State Engineer received $5,000 for its "Water Conservation Teacher Mini-Workshop," which educates teachers about water issues in New Mexico and supplies them with existing water conservation student and teacher educational materials.  

      This year, EPA's Region 6 office received 52 entries from Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Fifteen groups were selected to receive about $160,000 in environmental education grants. Since 1992, EPA has received between $2 and $3 million in grant funding per year and has awarded about 1,800 grants nationwide.
