PLATING COMPANY AND OWNER SENTENCED
Olymco Inc., a division of Delta Plating Inc., both of Canton, Ohio, and Olymco’s President and Operator, Alex Sklavenitis, also of Canton, were sentenced on May 22, in U.S. Court for the Northern District of Ohio in Cleveland following their guilty plea. Both the Olymco Inc., and Sklaventis pleaded guilty for knowingly discharging wastewater containing chromium, zinc and nickel into a creek without a National Pollution Discharge Elimination System permit. According to the charges, the wastewater was discharged between July 3, 1991 and May 5, 1995. As part of his plea, Sklavenitis admitted that he repeatedly falsely denied to civil inspectors that the Olymco Inc., plant was contaminating the creek, which ultimately flows into the Tuscarawas River. However, when EPA Criminal Investigation Division Special Agents served a search warrant at Olymco Inc., in May 1995, it was determined that the Olymco plant was connected to a storm sewer that was the source of the contamination in the creek. Sklavenitis was sentenced to six months imprisonment, six months of home detention, one year supervised release and 200 hours of community service. In addition he will also be required to pay the costs of monitoring his home detention. Olymco Inc., was fined $60,000 and required to pay $20,000 to the Canton sewer authority. The case was investigated jointly by the U.S. EPA and the Ohio EPA.
