EPA TO ANNOUNCE GLOBAL WARMING INITIATIVES AND AWARDS OCT. 23-27
EPA will announce three new climate protection initiatives, at the Earth Technologies Forum on Oct. 23-26 at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. Highly reflective roofs on buildings and homes that reflect solar heat to reduce the need for air conditioning will soon carry the ENERGY STAR label. The ENERGY STAR label, jointly sponsored by EPA and the Department of Energy, is a national symbol of energy efficiency that saves consumers money and helps reduce emissions of carbon dioxide, the most pervasive global warming gas. EPA will also announce initiatives with the electric utility and magnesium casting industry to control emissions of sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), the most potent greenhouse gas identified to date by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. Following the Forum, at the same hotel on Oct. 27, Todd Stern, Assistant to President Clinton for Special Projects, and EPA Deputy Administrator Peter Robertson will present the first 1998 Global Climate and Stratospheric Ozone Protection Awards to 49 companies. Winners include such well-known organizations as British Petroleum, Lockheed Martin Missiles & Space, the United States Marine Corps, the Trane Co., McDonald’s Corp., Compaq Corp., the American Academy of Dermatology and Whirlpool Corp.
