Friends of the Rio Grande Wins EPA Award for Environmental Projects

     The Rio Grande Ecology Institute for Teens, an extensive summer program for teenagers sponsored by the Friends of the Rio Grande Nature Center, will receive an Environmental Education grant of $5,600  from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This grant will allow students to learn about the Rio Grande's river forest through fieldwork, presentations and studying water quality, effects of native and exotic plants and hydro-geologic features.

     "New Mexicans are keenly aware of the importance of protecting vital water resources.  This program is an  investment in the future of the Rio Grande and all the people, plants and animals it supports," Regional Administrator Gregg Cooke said.

     This year EPA received more than 70 entries from Arkansas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas. Fifteen groups were selected to receive nearly $150,000 in Environmental Education grants.

     Since 1992, EPA has distributed more than $2 million annually through about 1,700 grants.
