EPA TO HOST ANNOUNCEMENT OF UPCOMING
NATIONAL POISON PREVENTION WEEK
NATIONAL POISON PREVENTION WEEK
On March 10, EPA will host a ceremony to announce and publicize the upcoming National Poison Prevention Week, March 15-21. National Poison Prevention Week is an annual event conducted to heighten public awareness of accidental poisonings and exposures in the United States, particularly among children under the age of six. EPA is co-sponsoring this year’s event with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The theme this year is preventing pesticide poisonings. In 1996, poison centers across the United States reported more than a million calls from consumers about toxic exposures or poisonings to children under the age of six, including 22 fatalities, across all age ranges. More than 100,000 of these calls were related to pesticides. EPA has developed a leaflet and fact sheet that provide practical tips and common sense steps that can be taken to prevent pesticide poisoning incidents from happening. EPA’s Assistant Administrator for Prevention, Pesticides and Toxic Substances, Dr. Lynn R. Goldmann, will participate in the announcement, along with Ann Brown, Chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. Reporters are invited to attend the ceremony, scheduled for Tuesday, March 10, at 10:00 a.m. in EPA’s Education Center, 401 M Street, S.W., Washington, D.C. To receive EPA’s leaflet or for more information about pesticides, call the National Pesticides Telecommunications Network at 1-800-858-7378.
