The oil tanks at Fetzer Greenhouse can store 90,000 gallons of fuel above ground and 20,000 gallons underground. EPA cited Fetzer for failing to prepare a spill prevention plan for his facility, inadequate fencing and lighting of his fuel tanks, inadequate spill safeguards on truck loading operations, and violations of inspection and record keeping requirements. The plan is required under federal laws.
As part of the settlement, Mr. Fetzer neither admitted nor denied the alleged violations, but agreed to bring the facility into compliance with spill prevention regulations.
With billions of gallons of oil stored throughout the U.S., oil spills pose a constant threat to land and water. EPA’s spill prevention regulations, that have been in place since 1974, are designed to reduce the serious health and environmental risks of petroleum product leaks and spills.
