Grace Hill Settlement House to Receive $454,849 Grant for First Student School Bus Retrofit Program

MEDIA ADVISORY

(Kansas City, Kan., April 1, 2009) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 7, will present a $454,849 grant this week to Grace Hill Settlement House, enabling them to provide funds to First Student School Bus Company for the School Bus Retrofit Program in St. Louis, Missouri. The grant is being awarded under EPA's Blue Skyways Collaborative.

The grant money will be used to retrofit approximately 520 school buses with crankcase ventilation filters. The buses are primarily owned by First Student and serve St. Louis Public Schools' children. The retrofit will prevent fugitive diesel emissions from entering the passenger areas of buses where the children sit, and will keep more than 26.5 tons of particulate matter and 345.2 tons of hydrocarbons from entering the air annually.
