FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
No. 09-OPA168
(Chicago, Ill - Sept. 11, 2009) U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 5 has reached an agreement with WRR Environmental Services Co. Inc., Eau Claire, Wis., for alleged violations of federal rules on hazardous waste. The hazardous waste treatment and storage firm has agreed to pay a penalty of $20,000 and pay for supplemental environmental projects costing at least $69,771 to settle the violations.
WRR Environmental, located at 5200 Ryder Road, was cited for violating Resource Conservation and Recovery Act requirements for managing hazardous waste including failure to comply with emergency preparedness and prevention requirements, manage storage tanks and secondary containment systems, and comply with monitoring, inspection and recording requirements. Following a fire in June 2007, the company rebuilt parts of the facility and is now in compliance with requirements.
WRR Environmental will clean up a stream adjacent to its facility and conduct two household hazardous waste collections days in November of 2009 and 2010. Under RCRA, EPA regulates hazardous waste from production to final disposal.
