EPA SUPERFUND REMOVAL SITE ASSESSMENT UNDERWAY AT THE ANNISTON PCB SITE, ANNISTON, CALHOUN COUNTY, ALABAMA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that a Superfund removal site assessment is underway at the Anniston PCB site in Anniston, Calhoun County, Alabama. The assessment involves sampling to identify type and location of PCB contamination to help determine if clean-up is necessary. The assessment is taking place under the authority and direction of the Agency’s Emergency Response and Removal Branch and is expected to be completed by October 2000. The assessment will include several scheduled phases of sampling. Residential soil sampling will occur in two phases: the initial phase was completed in mid-February and the second phase will occur in late spring. Additionally, EPA and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) will conduct sampling on commercial properties in early spring. Sampling will occur in West Anniston, near Snow Creek, as far north as Blue Mountain Road and as far south as Hobson City. Air sampling is planned to begin in early summer. The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA, also known as Superfund) and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) authorize EPA to respond to actual or threatened releases of hazardous substances that may endanger public health, welfare or the environment.
