(Puebla, Mexico - June 22, 2004) EPA Administrator Mike Leavitt will meet with the environment ministers from Mexico and Canada at the Commission for Environmental Cooperation’s (CEC) 11th Council Session meeting, June 21-23, in Puebla, Mexico. Leavitt will provide broad guidance on the scope and direction of the CEC’s North American environmental protection efforts for the next 10 years.

“This important meeting provides an opportunity for the United States to reaffirm our commitment to collaboration with our North American partners in protecting and improving our shared environment,” said Leavitt, who will be making his third international visit since being tapped to head the Agency in November 2003. “Further developing relationships with my Canadian and Mexican colleagues is a key component of my 500-Day Plan to accelerate environmental progress.”

U.S. Ambassador to Mexico, Tony Garza, said, “I’m delighted EPA Administrator Leavitt will participate in this important meeting. His emphasis on collaborative problem-solving will help us meet our North American environmental goals through balanced, open and inclusive approaches.”

The CEC is an international organization created by Canada, Mexico and the United States under the North American Agreement on Environmental Cooperation (NAAEC). The CEC was established to address regional environmental concerns, help prevent potential trade and environmental conflicts, and promote the effective enforcement of environmental law. The Agreement complements the environmental provisions of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
