CHILDREN FLOOD FANEUIL HALL TO GET AWARDS FROM EPA NEW ENGLAND

BOSTON -- Nearly 1,000 children from elementary schools across New England will fill Faneuil Hall in Boston 10:30 am tomorrow, Friday, June 9, to receive awards from the New England office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

"These students, with the help of their dedicated teachers, put their creative energies to work and participated in EPA New England's 28th annual Paul G. Keough Earth Artist contest," said EPA's regional administrator Mindy S. Lubber. "These kids took on some pretty hard environmental issues like recycling and habitat protection and crafted their own solutions through art and poetry. We are very proud of these young people and their teachers, and have confidence that they can be tomorrow's environmental leaders."

EPA's marketing director, Doug Gutro, will be master of ceremonies and will present awards to the young students Winners of the Earth Artist contest will receive an award certificate at the ceremony in their state; and participation certificates are given to each class who enters the program.

In order to participate in this program, New England teachers set aside time for students in grades kindergarten through six to discuss environmental issues, and then prepare a poem or poster on a recycled paper grocery bag reflecting an environmental theme. The best entry from each class was submitted to EPA for review by a judging panel of EPA staff.
