On Friday, Nov. 21, the Metropolitan Planning Organization of El Paso convened a press conference where it formally requested the assistance of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality in upgrading the area's air quality status.
EPA Regional Administrator Richard E. Greene said, "EPA is very pleased with the improvements in air quality for ozone and carbon monoxide in El Paso. It’s an excellent signal that sound local leadership and cooperation with the community can, when given the freedom and opportunity, significantly improve the quality of life of our residents. The efforts of the city and county to implement control programs such as vehicle inspection and maintenance, cleaner fuels and control of industrial emissions have been very effective. We applaud El Paso and its leadership for taking the necessary steps to make this happen, and we stand ready to work with Texas as it develops the redesignation and maintenance plan for El Paso."
