The U. S. Environmental Protection Agency has begun a Superfund hazardous substance removal at the A& H Sales site in Tampa, Hillsborough County, Florida. A removal is a short-term cleanup intended to stabilize or clean up a site that poses an imminent and substantial threat to human health or the environment. The removal is taking place under the authority and direction of the Agency’s Emergency Response and Removal Branch (ERRB).
The removal will include:
temporary relocation of residents living on-site;
consolidation of compatible waste streams;
sampling, analysis, and profiling of drums and containers;
characterization of drum contents and transportation off-site for disposal; and
performing soil samples to determine the nature and extent of any soil contamination.
The removal is expected to be completed by October 1999 at an estimated cost of $952,000.
A & H Sales site is a family-operated salvage business. The site occupies approximately 1.5-acres and consists of a residence and twelve outbuildings. Numerous containers filled with various types of solvents, paints, and paint-related chemicals are stored in several buildings on site. The containers and drums are in poor condition due to their age and exposure to the elements.
