PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has awarded a $2,168,300 grant to the city of Moundsville, Marshall County, W. Va. to help pay for construction of a new three-million gallon per day drinking water treatment plant.

“Providing a new drinking water system for the residents of Moundsville and Marshall Township, will help protect public health by ensuring a safe, reliable source of drinking water that meets drinking water standards,” said Donald S. Welsh, administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

The treatment plant will remove harmful organic, inorganic, and biological contaminants and high level of hardness and manganese compounds present in the city’s groundwater supplies. The treatment facility will be located near the existing wells along the east bank of the Ohio River, about one mile north of downtown Moundsville.

The grant will pay 55 percent of the estimated $12,450,000 project cost, and the city will pay the balance.
