Philadelphia Woman Wins EPA Partnership Award

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency presented its prestigious Partnership Award to Martha Anderson of Philadelphia for her contributions to the nation’s chemical emergency preparedness programs. One of 11 award winners nationwide, Anderson was recognized during EPA’s tenth Chemical Emergency Preparedness and Prevention conference and award ceremony here on Sept. 22.

EPA’s mid-Atlantic region presents the partnership awards to companies, organizations or individuals who demonstrate exceptional creativity or innovation in state or local chemical emergency preparedness.

Anderson, who has led the Philadelphia local emergency planning committee for seven years, has been instrumental in setting up community based environmental fairs where community members can meet representatives from local industries that handle hazardous materials. Fair attendees include representatives from local, state and federal agencies involved with environmental protection and emergency response. These groups provide exhibits and educational materials and personnel to answer questions.

"This award symbolizes a special brand of dedication to environmental health and safety in local communities," said W. Michael McCabe, EPA regional administrator.

EPA also praised Anderson’s outreach programs for being unsurpassed in their ability to unite government, citizens and business for helping to make Philadelphia a better place to live and work.
