LONG ISLAND SOUND STUDY OFFERS $5,000 GRANTS AND TWO GRANT WRITING WORKSHOPS

For the sixth consecutive year, the Long Island Sound Study is seeking proposals for projects, programs, or publications to educate and involve the public in the protection and restoration of the water quality and habitat of Long Island Sound and its watershed. This year, the grant program received additional funding from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, increasing the pot of money available for projects from $50,000 to $86,000.

"Local involvement in the cleanup of Long Island Sound is vitally important," said Mark Tedesco, Director of the EPA Long Island Sound Office. "These grants help support partnerships to educate and involve people in activities in their communities."

Some past projects include: production of a series of posters on controlling nonpoint source pollution; the Sound Facts booklet; a tidal wetlands brochure; and after school and summer programs for children of low-income families. So far, grants worth $132,450 have funded 41 projects that assisted 156 teachers, educated 1,500 children, and produced 16,000 copies of publications available to the public.

Proposals must be postmarked by November 15, 1999. The maximum funding for each proposal is $5,000.

The Long Island Sound Office is also offering two grant-writing workshops to guide applicants through the proposal process. Workshops will be held October 5 at the Stamford Government Center, Stamford, CT, and October 7 at the State University of New York, in Stony Brook, NY. The Long Island Sound Study, conducted under EPA's National Estuary Program, is a cooperative effort between EPA and the states of Connecticut and New York to protect and restore the Sound and its ecosystem.
