EPA SEEKS PUBLIC COMMENT ON THE PROPOSED CLEANUP PLAN AT THE MACALLOY CORPORATION SUPERFUND SITE IN CHARLESTON, SOUTH CAROLINA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced today the public comment period regarding the proposed cleanup plan for the Macalloy Corporation Superfund site in Charleston, South Carolina. The public comment period began on April 11, 2002 and will extend until midnight May 11, 2002.
The Proposed Plan outlines EPA's preferred alternative for cleaning up contaminated soil, groundwater, storm water, and sediments at the approximately 147-acre Macalloy facility on 1800 Pittsburgh Avenue. The estimated $11.7 million proposed cleanup plan is protective of human health and the environment.'/P> The major components of the plan include the following:
A public meeting will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2002 at the Commissioners of Public Works Building, 103 St. Philip Street in Charleston. Representatives from EPA, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, and Macalloy will be present to answer questions regarding the plan and future activities at the site.
