Global Earth Observation System Benefits to be Featured by EPA and NOAA Administrators

(08/16/04) On Tuesday, Aug. 17, Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael O. Leavitt and Vice Admiral Conrad C. Lautenbacher, Administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), will give a briefing on the benefits to states of the planned Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS), a world-wide network that will continuously monitor the land, sea and air. GEOSS will link data from satellites, ocean buoys, and ground-based air and water quality monitors to take the pulse of the planet. The tools provided by GEOSS will help states better manage watersheds, improve drinking water quality, protect the food supply, and make transportation systems safer.
