October 2003 is Children's Health Month

(10/01/2003) Protecting children from environmental health risks is fundamental to the mission of EPA. Children need clean air to breathe, clean water to drink and safe food to eat. During Children’s Health Month, EPA will highlight its efforts to protect children from environmental harm. Events and activities throughout the month will be used to educate parents and children on a myriad of topics critical to children’s health. EPA is taking action to protect children. EPA’s Clean School Bus USA Campaign will reduce diesel emissions that can cause respiratory disease and exacerbate asthma. Children spend much of their day at school and EPA has a number of programs - Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools, SunWise School Program, Integrated Pest Management in Schools, to name a few - to promote healthy learning environments for children. EPA is supporting efforts to increase our understanding of the effects of environmental contaminants on children as well as providing leadership on a variety of children’s environmental health initiatives worldwide. EPA’s Administrator co-chairs the President’s Task Force on Environmental Health Risks to Children which has developed a web site with important children’s health information at: http://www.childrenshealth.gov . An October calendar with a “tip a day” is available for parents and children as a fun tool to participate in Children’s Health Month.
