FLORIDA MAN INDICTED FOR ILLEGAL HAZARDOUS WASTE STORAGE
William Recht of Long Boat Key, Fla., was indicted on July 28, in U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida in Tampa on charges that he violated the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act by illegally storing hazardous wastes without a permit. Recht was the chief executive officer of the Willima Recht Co., which owned Durex Industries in Tampa. The indictment alleges that Recht illegally stored hazardous wastes at the Durex facility between August 1993 and March 1994. In a previous case, Durex and two employees were found guilty of hazardous waste law violations involving the deaths of two nine year old boys who were playing in a dumpster at the Durex facility in June 1992. If convicted, Recht faces a maximum of five years imprisonment, a maximum fine of $250,000 and up to three years of supervised release on each of the eight charges. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division and the FBI.
