Local Educators to Receive Funds for Environmental Projects

As schools open their doors for the new school year, some educators in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska are engaging in environmental education projects funded, in part, by $180,000 in federal grants issued by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Ten grants were announced this month by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Pacific Northwest Regional Office.

The grants were awarded to local organizations, nonprofit organizations, government agencies, schools and universities whose projects strive to increase people’s knowledge and awareness about the environment and its associated challenges. The grant recipients, projects and funding amounts are as follows:

ALASKA

• Homer Soil & Water Conservation District (Homer): “Training Alaska’s Youth – A Natural Resource Career Development Program”
• Takshanuk Watershed Council (Haines): “Nature Studies Outdoor Education Expansion for Haines Borough”

IDAHO

• Bonneville County Historical Society and the Museum of Idaho (Idaho Falls): “Rocky Mountain Adventure”
• Idaho Department of Health and Welfare (Boise): “Environmental Education – Curriculum Workshops”

OREGON

• Friends of Zenger Farm (Portland): “Grow Wise Youth Education Program”
• Portland State University (Portland): “Walking Softly Teacher Workshop”
• Education Environmental Association of Oregon (Portland): “Professional Environmental Education Certification Program Development”
• Beaverton School District (Beaverton): “Marmot Dam Removal Study”
• Cascadia Region Green Building Council (Portland): “High Performance Green Building: Weighing the Options”

WASHINGTON

• Port Townsend Marine Science Society (Port Townsend): “Discovery Lab Monitoring Program”

“The grants help local communities stretch their own resources and try new ways of connecting reading, writing and arithmetic to environmental issues,” said Sally Hanft, Environmental Education Grants Coordinator in EPA’s Seattle Office.

EPA is currently soliciting grant applications for the coming year. Schools, not-for-profit organizations, state and local government education or environmental agencies, and tribal education agencies or not-for-profit tribal organizations may apply. The annual EPA grants program gives financial support to projects that increase the public’s awareness and knowledge about the environment, and provide skills to make informed decisions and take responsible action.

Application information is available on the EPA website: www.epa.gov/r10earth or by calling 1-800-424-4372. The closing date and time for submission of completed applications is November 23, 2005, 5:00 p.m. based on the local time zone of the office for which the proposal is being submitted. Applications must be received in EPA Headquarters or in a regional office by the closing date and time in order to receive consideration.
