IOWA MAN INDICTED ON HAZARDOUS WASTE CHARGES
Harold J. Abdo of Davenport, Iowa, was indicted on March 24 in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Iowa in Des Moines for allegedly storing hazardous wastes in violation of the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA). Abdo was Chief Financial Officer at the R.V. Hopkins Inc., a drum reconditioning facility in Davenport, where he represented the company in its dealings with EPA and supervised the handling, storage and disposal of hazardous wastes. A May 1997 removal assessment inspection conducted by EPA revealed that hazardous materials had allegedly been stored at the site for a longer period of time than was allowed in the facility’s permit. If convicted, Abdo faces a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison and/or a fine of up to $250,000. The case was investigated by EPA’s Criminal Investigation Division, and is being prosecuted by the U.S. Department of Justice.
