PHASE III OF EPA SUPERFUND REMOVAL SITE ASSESSMENT TO BEGIN AT THE ANNISTON PCB SITE, ANNISTON, CALHOUN COUNTY, ALABAMA

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that it will begin phase III of a Superfund removal site assessment on April 25, 2000 at the Anniston PCB site in Anniston, Calhoun County, Alabama. Phase III of the site assessment, taking place under the authority and direction of the Agency’s Emergency Response and Removal Branch, includes additional residential soil sampling. The removal site assessment involves sampling to identify type and location of PCB contamination to help determine if clean- up is necessary. The first phase was completed in mid-February and included residential soil sampling. Phase II , completed in March 2000, included soil sampling at industrial and commercial facilities. Additional phases may be added as information is collected and analyzed. The Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA, also known as Superfund) and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) authorize EPA to respond to actual or threatened releases of hazardous substances that may endanger public health, welfare or the environment.
