EPA SOLICITS PROPOSALS FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGE GRANTS

EPA's Office of Air and Radiation is soliciting proposals for the fiscal year 1997 Sustainable Development Challenge Grants (SDCG), which is one of President Clinton's initiatives for Reinventing Environmental Regulations. The grants are intended to encourage community-based projects that integrate environmental protection and community and economic goals, leverage private and public investments to enhance environmental quality and build partnerships to increase communities' long-term capacity to protect the environment. Total funding available is $5 million, approximately 80 percent of EPA's funding will target urban areas and 20 percent to rural areas. Eligible applicants include community groups, non-profit organizations, local governments, tribes and states. The proposals must meet the following three criteria: (1) sustainablity; (2) community commitment and contribution; and (3) measurable results. EPA will fund proposals in two categories: (1) $50,000 or less and (2) between $50,001 and $250,000. Applicants can obtain proposal kits by calling 202-260-6812; by faxing to 202-260-2555; or on the Internet at https://www.epa.gov/ecocommunity. Proposals should be submitted to EPA's Office of Air and Radiation (MC-6101), 401 M St. S.W., Washington, D.C. 20460 by Aug. 15.
