EPA CONSIDERS TURNING NATIONAL RADON PROFICIENCY
PROGRAM OVER TO PRIVATE SECTOR
EPA will hold a public workshop on May 30 to examine the agency's options and the mechanics for privatizing its National Radon Proficiency Program. EPA developed the program in l985 to address state and consumer needs for a reliable source of information for evaluating radon measurement and mitigation service providers. Since then, the Agency said the radon services industry has matured substantially to a point where it could reduce its direct involvement in making proficiency determinations. States also have much stronger radon-related public health and consumer protection activities. Today, more than 20 stats have established some form of registration, certification or licensing program for the radon service business. EPA is interested in the private sector's potential to operate the program cost effectively. The agency expects a wide variety of organizations to attend the workshop, including those with an interest in operating the program, states with similar programs, radon industry service providers, program participants and members of the general public. Interested parties are encouraged to obtain and review the materials before the workshop. EPA will accept written comments on the plan until July 1, l996. The workshop will be held at the Andrew Mellon Auditorium in Washington, D.C., located on Constitution Ave. N.W., between l2th and l4th Streets (directly across from the National Museum of American History). Notice of the workshop will be published in the Federal Register soon. For further information contact: Ed Chu, RPP Privatizatin Workgroup, Indoor Environments Division (6604J), 40l M.
