EPA TO AWARD BROWNFIELDS GRANT TO NEGRO LEAGUES BASEBALL MUSEUM
EPA will be presenting a check for $165,047 to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) in Kansas City, Mo., for brownfields cleanup.
These funds will facilitate the cleanup of asbestos and sludge at the former Paseo YMCA building. The grant will also assist in outreach activities for the 18th and Vine District surrounding the museum. EPA Regional Administrator James Gulliford, in Kansas City, Mo., said, “We’re working with communities and partners such as the NLBM to transform problem properties into community assets.” The chairman of the NLBM, Buck O’Neil, said, “We are delighted to receive this grant to rehabilitate the former YMCA building, which housed African-American baseball players. This is an ongoing effort to save this forgotten historical American legacy.”
