West Virginia Agency Nationally Recognized for Environmental Performance

PHILADELPHIA (May 31, 2007) - The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recognized the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for its outstanding support of the national performance track program. Specifically, EPA has awarded the DEP Division of Water and Waste Management with the 2007 Performance Track State Appreciation Award.

“Performance track partners go beyond mandated requirements - - proving that doing what’s good for the environment is also good for the bottom line. EPA and its performance track partners are able to make such progress because of the significant collaboration of our state environmental agency partners,” said mid-Atlantic regional administrator Donald S. Welsh.

EPA’s performance track program encourages facilities with strong environmental records to go above and beyond their legal requirements. Members, who include major corporations, small businesses, and public facilities, set measurable goals to improve the quality of our nation’s air, water and land. Since June 2000, performance track membership has grown to more than 450 facilities in 46 states and Puerto Rico, with members making more than 1,500 commitments to the environment.

The West Virginia state environmental agency received the award for its innovation in protecting its water resources. The state agency collaborated with a performance track member, Dow West Virginia, to provide waste incentives that enabled Dow to pursue an ambitious set of sustainability goals.
