PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has a awarded a $5,000 environmental education grant to the Mountain Institute of Elkins, W.V. to fund teacher workshops on environmental sciences.
Under the program, 20 teachers from kindergarten through grade 12 will be selected statewide to participate in two three-day workshops that will include instruction, hands-on activities and interaction with staff mentors to carry out research projects using the facilities and expertise at the Mountain Institute and David Elkins College. In followup sessions, teachers will report on independent research projects and how they used applications in their classrooms.
“By maintaining a prominent environmental education program in our schools, we can help ensure that our future leaders will have the knowledge and experience to make sound environmental decisions that protect our natural resources,” said Donald S. Welsh, EPA’s mid-Atlantic regional administrator.
