EPA ASKING FOR PUBLIC COMMENT ON NEW DATA FOR TWO PROPOSED RULES TO CONTROL MICROBIALS AND DISINFECTANTS UNDER SAFE DRINKING WATER ACT

EPA is asking for public comment on two notices providing new data for two rules proposed in July l994 under the Safe Drinking Water Act to control microbial pathogens, such as cryptosporidium, and disinfectant byproducts in drinking water. The l994 proposed rules, the Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule and the Stage 1 Disinfectants/Disinfection Byproducts Rule, also address risk trade-offs between the two types of contaminants. At the same time, EPA is re-opening the public comment period for 90 days for the entire l994 proposed Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule. The new data notices present information that has become available since the rules were proposed. The notices also include recommendations from an advisory committee established by EPA in l997, consisting of representatives of the Agency, states, local governments, water suppliers, public interest groups and others. EPA is seeking comment from the public on all aspects of the notices and is particularly interested in comments on the advisory committee's recommendations. The public comment period for both new data notices also will be open for 90 days beginning on the date of publication in the Federal Register, expected next week. EPA intends to issue final rules in November 1998. For additional information on the notices, the general public can call the Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791.
