EPA AND NORAMTECH CORPORATION SIGN AGREEMENT TO
DEVELOP SAFER DETERGENT
EPA signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Noramtech Corp., Kansas City, Mo., to promote a laundry detergent that minimizes environmental impacts for institutional cleaners. Under this MOU, the Agency will provide technical advice and support in reformulating and improving Noramtech Corporation’s “Wash ‘N Bleach Extra” detergent product. Noramtech Corporation has agreed to formulate the product based on cleaning agents that quickly biodegrade into non-polluting byproducts. This new formula will also include ingredients that do not deplete the oxygen of surface waters and will also contain a chlorine-free oxygen-based bleaching agent. Additional environmental benefits associated with this one-cycle, low-temperature formulation include increased water and energy efficiencies and extended fabric life. The voluntary agreement was established under EPA’s Design for the Environment (DfE) program. EPA’s DfE program also works with several industry sectors, including institutional and industrial laundries, automotive refinishing, garment care, electronics and printing. More information on the DfE programs can be found at: http://ww.epa.gov/dfe or call 202-260-3374.
