EPA Recognizes Organizations for Improving Energy Efficiency and Protecting the Environment

PHILADELPHIA – The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 3 is pleased to recognize Giant Eagle, the Vanguard Group, and the World Bank as 2004 ENERGY STAR Leaders for demonstrating superior energy management and environmental leadership. These organizations have their headquarters in EPA Region 3; however, they may have buildings and facilities in other locations across the country.

ENERGY STAR partners who demonstrate continuous improvement in energy efficiency – not just in individual buildings, but organization-wide – qualify for EPA’s new ENERGY STAR Leaders recognition. EPA designates ENERGY STAR Leaders based on an organization’s actual energy efficiency, as measured using EPA’s energy performance rating system. The rating system provides an objective, standardized approach for measuring the efficiency of an entire building, or building portfolio, on a 100 point scale. Over 19,000 buildings across the country have used the rating system to help manage their energy use and reduce costs.

The groups recognized today have established a portfolio-wide energy efficiency baseline, a critical step in successful energy management.

The World Bank has taken the first step toward improving its energy efficiency by entering its baseline energy data and is poised to realize significant energy savings in the future.

The Vanguard Group has taken the next step in achievement and has earned recognition for achieving a 10-point energy improvement above their baseline rating.

Giant Eagle, with 138 corporate and 84 independently owned and operated stores throughout western Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia and Maryland, has earned recognition for achieving an energy rating of 75 or better for its entire building portfolio.

The significant achievements by the Vanguard Group and Giant Eagle demonstrate their commitment to superior energy performance. By managing their energy well, ENERGY STAR Leaders are showing leadership, improving their financial performance, and helping to protect the environment.
