DRAFT MERCURY RESEARCH STRATEGY AVAILABLE FOR REVIEW
A peer review public workshop, will be held from Dec. 8 - 9 in Washington, D.C., on the draft Mercury Research Strategy. This strategy lays out the directions for research lasting approximately five years to address questions about mercury risk assessment and risk management. The proposed areas of research on mercury include: human health and wildlife effects of methylmercury; methods to assess mercury and methylmercury exposure to humans and wildlife from fish-consumption; degree of exposure to methylmercury of children and women of child-bearing age; and releases of mercury from combustion and non-combustion sources from mercury-process chlor-alkali plants. Other areas of research also include how to develop effective messages to communicate the risks of consuming fish containing methylmercury among subpopulations at risk. The research strategy and details about the peer review meeting were published in the Federal Register on Nov. 15 and are available at https://www.epa.gov/fedrgstr as well as at: https://www.epa.gov/ncea under "What’s New."
