| The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced today that it will resume soil sampling in Anniston and Oxford, Calhoun County, Alabama on July 24, 2000. The Phase V sampling is part of an ongoing environmental removal site assessment and is a continuation of the residential sampling that began in February 2000. The assessment involves sampling for polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and other contaminants (e.g., metals, such as lead) to help determine the extent of contamination.
The EPA's Emergency Response and Removal Branch initiated a removal site assessment in mid-February. The assessment includes several phases:
- Phase I - residential soil sampling event, February 9, 2000
- Phase II - industrial/commercial sampling, March 20, 2000
- Phase III - residential soil sampling, April 25, 2000
- Phase IV - air monitoring and residential sampling, June 4, 2000
The removal assessment is expected to be completed by Spring, 2001.
The removal site assessment is being conducted in accordance with the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA, also known as Superfund) and the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act (SARA) authorize EPA to respond to actual or threatened releases of hazardous substances that may endanger public health, welfare or the environment.
