EXXON PROPOSES ALTERNATIVE XL STRATEGY
FOR SUPERFUND CLEANUP

The Exxon Co. has proposed an innovative alternative for the cleanup of a Superfund site located at the Sharon Steel Coke Works in Fairmont, W.Va. Changes proposed in the traditional Superfund cleanup process include shorter cleanup time frames that more quickly eliminate the potential risk to human health and the environment, a commitment from Exxon to work with stakeholders and community groups to seek interested developers for commercial/industrial redevelopment of the site, and a commitment from Exxon to demolish and dispose of all on-site buildings and structures. The expectation is that the strategy, proposed under EPA’s Project XL program, will achieve superior environmental performance beyond what could be achieved by the current federal and state regulatory systems. Project XL, which stands for “eXcellence and Leadership,” is a national initiative that tests innovative ways of achieving better and more cost-effective public health and environmental protection. Further information is available on the Internet at: https://www.epa.gov/ProjectXL, or from Project XL’s information line 202-260-5754.
