Federal, state and local officials will join local business leaders and citizens to celebrate the cleanup of the former Cleveland Mill site in Grant County, New Mexico.
The mountainous site was contaminated by tons of soil and tailings containing heavy metals left by mining operations in the early part of this century. Pollution from the long-abandoned mining waste had contaminated a nearby creek. There also was concern about rainwater runoff carrying contaminants into a local aquifer.
The waste was excavated, treated and contained under a multilayer cap to protect area drinking water sources. Erosion control and monitoring of ground and surface water at the site will continue to ensure that the public health is protected.
