FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

(Kansas City, Kan., August 8, 2011) - EPA Region 7 will host a public meeting tomorrow night to discuss the results of its off-site environmental sampling of properties near the Carter Carburetor Site in St. Louis, Mo.

The public meeting will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday, August 9, at the Herbert Hoover Boys and Girls Club, 2901 N. Grand Avenue, in St. Louis. Representatives from EPA Region 7 will discuss the results of surface soil, sediment and vapor intrusion air sampling that occurred in May 2011 at several properties adjacent to the Carter Carburetor Site.

EPA’s sampling was conducted at the request of community members who are concerned about possible environmental health hazards associated with the Carter Carburetor building.

The Carter Carburetor Site, a large industrial property, is located at 2800 to 2840 North Spring Street, in north St. Louis. The former carburetor manufacturing plant operated from the 1930s until it closed in 1984. EPA has been addressing hazardous waste conditions at the site under the EPA Superfund Removal Program.
