Phoenix Metal-Plater to Pay $10,000 for Hazardous Waste Violations

     SAN FRANCISCO   The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently fined a Phoenix
metal-plating company $10,000 for hazardous waste violations.

     During a routine inspection at Sav-On Plating of Arizona, Inc. at 17 West Watkins St., EPA inspectors found a number of violations, including:

     *failure to maintain proper aisle space between hazardous waste containers
     *inadequate training plan and training records;
    *failure to close six open containers of hazardous waste during storage;
    *non-operable eye wash;
    *seven improperly labeled drums of used oil.

     "Companies that handle toxic waste need to manage it properly not only to protect the
environment, but to ensure public safety," said Amy Zimpfer, acting director of the Waste
Division in the EPA's Pacific Southwest office. "The EPA will continue to strictly enforce all
regulations governing facilities who generate and manage hazardous waste."

     Since the inspections, Sav-On has corrected all of the violations found by EPA inspectors.
