Del Amo Site Clean-up to Begin
SAN FRANCISCO -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a media availability and tour to break ground on the construction of a cap over the Del Amo chemical waste pits in unincorporated Los Angeles County between Torrance and Carson.

What: Media Availability with photo opportunities showcasing cleanup of Del Amo waste pits. (EPA officials will be available for interview, but no formal presentation is
scheduled.)
When: Wednesday, June 2, 1999
8:30 a.m. - 11 a.m.
Where: EPA Site Headquarters, Del Amo Blvd. between Vermont Ave. and Normandy Ave.
Why: To showcase important milestones on one of the West Coast's largest Superfund sites.
The Del Amo facility was built by the U.S. government in 1943 to produce synthetic rubber during World War II. The 280 acre plant continued to operate until 1972 when it was dismantled and replaced by a business and industrial park. The Del Amo waste pits cover 4 acres at the southern edge of the former site.
