SAN FRANCISCO --The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency today announced that Hawaiian Airlines has agreed to pay a $67,018 penalty for hazardous waste violations at its Honolulu Airport facility on the island of Oahu. The airline has since corrected the violations and is now in compliance with the law.
"It is in Hawaiian Airlines' own self-interest to continue to comply with hazardous waste regulations," said Julie Anderson, the EPA's regional Waste Division director. "The public's health and the health of our environment depend on it."
Based on an EPA inspection in 1999, EPA cited Hawaiian Airlines for operating a hazardous waste storage facility without a permit. Other violations included inadequate oversight and management of hazardous wastes, such as open and mis-marked chemical containers, and a leaking drum that released several gallons of paint-related solvents into a chemical storage area surrounded by a protective berm.
The EPA conducted this enforcement action in cooperation with the Hawaii Department of Health. Hawaiian Airlines violated the federal Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, which governs the storage, transportation, and disposal of hazardous waste.
