LORETTO, Pa. -- Saint Francis College in Cambria County has received a $9,745 environmental education grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to run a unique environmental workshop about the oceans for elementary and secondary school teachers.

The program entitled, “Bringing the Ocean to Western Pa. and Bringing Western Pa. to the Ocean,” will be held at Wallops Island, Va. in the Chesapeake Bay for 22 teachers from throughout western Pennsylvania. Teachers will learn about ocean sea life and learn how to set up salt water aquariums in their classrooms so they can teach students about ocean ecology.

“This program will help teachers integrate environment and ecology standards into their classrooms so that students and understand the important relationship between fresh water in Pennsylvania and the ocean systems,” said Bradley Campbell, regional administrator for EPA’s mid-Atlantic region.

EPA’s education grant program is designed to stimulate grass-roots environmental education. This was one of six grants totaling more than $42,000 awarded in Pennsylvania. Nationally, EPA awarded more than $2.3 million in environmental education grants in 2000 to schools, civic groups and non-profit organizations.
